During the Edo period (1603-1868), people did not have baths at home, and public baths were built to meet the need. During the Edo period, there were about 600 of them. At first they were steam baths, then large baths were developed. Since everyone was naked and people mingled regardless of age, gender or position, the bathhouse was a place of equality. Apparently another popular item was a scented lotion made from flower essences, using what is still known as ranbiki. This fragrance has the warmth and friendly glow of the moment you step out of the bath.
