However, incense was a part of everyday life long before our today's society with its high levels of stress. They have long helped people calm down, collect themselves and look into themselves. Experiments with burning various incense sticks in the cultures of the peoples of East Asia long preceded the formation of the art of incense.

The word "incense" came from the Latin word "to burn". Usage in everyday life can be traced back to ancient Egypt with its burial ceremonies, the elimination of demons and as an offering to the gods during rituals. Incense was used in India and other parts of South Asia as early as 3300 BC, and in ancient China in 2000 BC.
