The custom of admiring sakura blossoms took hold during the Edo period. The somei-yoshino cherry tree, which can be seen today in groves throughout Japan, was originally an ornamental tree. Visiting sakura gardens was an opportunity to meet each other, look at other people, and show yourself. For the occasion, beautiful kimonos were donned and people sang and danced to celebrate the arrival of spring.
